Why group/partner piano lessons?

As early as 1982, the International Society of Music Educators said:

“Group instrumental teaching can provide a musical environment where good learning may take place beyond what is usually possible in individual instruction; further, a group can provide a social environment in which a student is supported and motivated, even challenged by peers. A group can provide a wider range of experience - discussion, critical listening, structured analysis and collective decision-making; further, a group can be a performing medium for each member in it.”

I think your child will enjoy learning in a pair, or a group for so many reasons:

- They can make new piano friends

- The support that they will give each other

- The encouragement they will receive from everyone in the group

- They get to hear concepts explained for all learning styles, which can make their individual understanding even deeper

- Being part of a group builds enthusiasm and motivation

- Group learning helps confidence in performance

- Groups are a great environment to learn important skills like e.g. harmonisation, transposition, improvisation, sight-reading, theory, ear training

- Ensemble work encourages the development of a strong sense of rhythm which is really important

- We can use games to teach concepts in a really fun way

- Above all they get to experience a special feeling that you get when you play with others. As pianists, we don't often get to experience it, but it's really motivational

When I think back to what inspired a real life-long connection with music for me, I realise that it was opportunities to play with others. Duets, ensembles and playing with orchestras are so much fun!

When I started teaching beginner piano I saw that these opportunities for playing with others was vital, and as pianists we so often miss out. That is why I decided to add partnered and small group beginner lessons to my usual individual lesson choice.

I cater to all learning styles, and as in groups everyone learns together, this has the advantage of my students' learning being more thorough. All students are involved in what we are learning throughout the lesson time. In groups, you can also listen to each other play, and have a perfect environment for developing both your 'musical ear' and your musical confidence. The lessons will be held in Nantwich.

If you prefer individual lessons, that's great too, I encourage all my students to get involved in playing duets and ensembles whenever they can.

Where?

Paired lessons can be held at the house of one of the students, if this is in Nantwich.

Group lessons will be for a small group e.g. 5 children, and held at a community hall in Nantwich.

"Mini Musicians" group lessons 45 minutes weekly

"Piano Launchpad" group lessons for 7-8 year olds 60 minutes weekly

This is a fun general musicianship and piano skills class, full of educational games for 4-5 year olds to give a firm grounding and readiness for formal piano lessons. There will be very little need for practice on a piano between lessons, but we will explore music and the piano through improvisation, songs and games. You therefore do not need to have a piano at home, but it is beneficial to have an instrument like a glockenspiel to experiment on. Between lessons, practising songs we have learnt or listening to music we have been discussing in the class will be helpful. There is more information on my "Mini Musicians" page.

This is an enjoyable 1 year starter pianist curriculum, with clear progression which is designed to give a solid grounding for complete beginners in for e.g. keyboard geography, notation reading, rhythm and beat, simple piano technique and aural musicianship skills. Most of all it's fun, and children learn best when they're enjoying themselves, or learning through play. It is not obligatory for students to practice between lessons although many will want to!
