Your Lessons
Lessons which you take with me will be all about you, and what you want to achieve. I will help you find your musical strengths and maximise them!
Together we will build your confidence in music making in an encouraging environment, and in an enjoyable way. You do not have to take exams, but if you would like to mark your achievement on the piano with a qualification I can advise and guide. Lessons will never be just about moving from one grade to the next - instilling an enthusiasm and love of music so that piano playing becomes a skill which stays with you for life is my priority. I love using creative games and activities to embed knowledge and skills. I believe everyone can learn music, and ability is not all to do with 'talent', but more to do with desire to learn and a commitment to practise.
Repertoire and materials which we use are chosen with your tastes in mind, and also ensuring variety, expanding your horizons. Together we can study many different styles of music, but bear in mind I have not studied jazz improvisation so I would suggest a specialist jazz piano teacher if that is what you would like to learn.
I teach all ages in individual lessons from around 6 years upwards. I particularly specialise in teaching beginners and elementary (early grade) students, and welcome adult beginners or returners. I will break down all the skills and knowledge you need into small bite sized chunks so you develop at your own pace. We do lots of fun activities to help you learn - even in my adults’ lessons!
You have the convenience of lessons in your own home, which also has the advantage of ensuring that you can check your 'piano posture' (so checking your seat is at the correct height, correct distance from the piano, with your feet stable) where you will be doing the majority of your playing.
I have access to resources to aid teaching students who are visually impaired. I also welcome students who are neurodiverse e.g. autism spectrum condition, ADD, ADHD as there is no reason why these should be a barrier to learning and enjoying the piano.
I also teach music theory &/or practical musicianship stand alone.
Are you interested in learning how to put together chord progressions and write your own songs? I could help you with that.
I currently have some piano teaching slots available in Nantwich and surrounding areas, during the day on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays, just contact me to discuss how I can help you. If you are shielding or self-isolating lessons can be online.
I encourage my students to meet one another to play duets, meet practice buddies of similar standard, and perform to my other students (or friends and family). Performances will always be in a supportive ‘safe space’ where as a group we can encourage each other to achieve. For adult learners, I understand how nerve-racking it can be to start learning the piano - I will help you to achieve to the best of your ability in a warm and encouraging environment.
Lessons are offered as weekly 30, 45 or 60 minute sessions, or fortnightly 60 minute sessions. Asynchronous (as needed) ongoing support is also possible for motivated students who require more flexibility. Before starting lessons we will meet to discuss your musical goals, interests and experience.
If you have a friend who also wants to learn who is of a similar standard to you, I offer joint lessons. I am also creating a waiting list for small group lessons which I plan to start soon. These will be in community halls in and around Nantwich.
